Picks of the Week
Variety Is The Spice of Life on Saturday Night, April 18, 2009
First, get some dinner in Rockville Town Square.
Then:
8 PM National Philharmonic Singers
Christ Episcopal Church
107 South Washington Street
Recently I had the great pleasure of hearing the Singers and they are amazing! Sacred vocal-instrumental music by Bach, Sibencanin, Carissimi and Mendelssohn, led by Predrag Gostaon, who is Assistant Conductor of the National Philharmonic. You can meet him at a pre-Concert Lecture at 7 PM. Donations will be accepted for Community Ministries of Rockville. Picture from the NP Singers.
Then:
9 PM The West End
Austin Grill Rockville
36 Maryland Avenue
Live music has returned to Austin Grill and The West End is back on stage with special musical guest Kia Ramarui and her violin. Americana rock with hard-hitting lyrics that never disappoint. They’ll play until late, so there’s plenty of time to make it over there. Free, all ages. The West End is Matthew Taylor, Mike Shawn, Monique DeFrees, and Brad Rourke.
Hoof it around Rockville Town Center this Saturday!

This event is free and open to the public. Guests may park in the white-lined spaces on the Rockville Campus of Montgomery College. The Commemoration will be held on Yom Hashoah, the Day of Remembrance of the six-million who died, and will pay tribute to victims as well as to survivors who convey tremendous courage in remembering and in helping us to remember. This year’s program will feature two Holocaust survivors who will share their experiences. Mohamed Yahya, a refugee from the Darfur region of Sudan and founder and executive director of the Damanga Coalition for Freedom and Democracy, will also speak. Yahya was part of the first human rights group to alert the international community to human rights abuses in western Sudan. To learn more about Yahya’s Coalition and its work, visit this site: http://www.damanga.org/. The Commemoration will begin with a reading not merely of names, but of narratives about real people from many diverse backgrounds who experienced Nazi persecution. Many of these people resisted genocide in some way. A partial exhibit of “Portraits of Life: Holocaust Survivors of Montgomery County,” a documentary project created to tell the stories of survivors who have lived in and around Montgomery County, will also be shown at the commemoration. “Portraits of Life” can be viewed online at: http://www.montgomerycollege.edu/humanities/?page=portraits_of_life

Pick of the Week
Friday Night (April 3) Go to VisArts from 6:30 PM to 9 PM
I know, I know, they have Art After Hours the first Friday of every month and I always tell you to go BUT if you haven’t seen the new photography exhibit, How You See It, you should. Stop by and say hello to my artist friends: Mimi Harris in the jewelry studio and Judith Heartsong in her painting studio.
Then on Saturday (April 4) help to clean up around the Croydon Creek Nature Center (and at Rockcrest Park at Broadwood by the playground) during the Twinbrook Trash-A-Thon from 9 AM – Noon. When my family hiked around Croydon Creek we saw tons of trash and couldn’t understand why it was all over the place. The staff told us rain water washes litter down from Route 28. I’m appalled! If you would like to volunteer, please email jmk58@comcast.net or call 301-503-4533. Adults have to clean the actual streams, but kids can clean the land and get Community Service Hours. Bring your sheets.

Pick of the Week
Well, this week is St. Patrick’s Day so I’ve been combing the local listings for green celebrations.
Branded ‘72 (formerly O’Brien’s) is offering up slow-cooked corn
ed beef (16 hours cooking!) and a fine duo of Irish lads callin’ themselves Doherty and McBurney, who’ll be performing from 4 until 7:30 PM. These fellows play traditional Irish folk music mixed with contemporary tunes from the Cranberries and U2.
If you know of any other public Irish celebrations in Rockville for the holiday, please let us know in the Comments. Cindy

Chris Chandler & Paul Benoit and special guest Pam Parker at Branded ‘72 “Don’t expect a typical folkie. Chandler has been called ‘a performance poet’ whose wordy creations owe as much to the traditions of theater and slam poetry as to music. If he had been born in another time, Chandler would have been a roaming minstrel or an edgy court jester. As his press materials assert, ‘Today, gritty road warriors do the same — outside the castle walls of corporate America,’ and Chandler calls himself ‘a troubadour road warrior.’ ” — The Washington Post

Social Bullies: Dealing with Cliques and Exclusion at Rockville Senior Center Every day thousands of teens wake up afraid to go to school. Bullying is a problem that affects millions of students of all races and classes. Bullying has everyone worried, not just the kids on its receiving end. Yet because parents, teachers, and other adults don’t always see it, they may not understand how extreme bullying can get. People used to think of bullies as the big kid on the playground taking your lunch money. Today, girls and boys are using less direct techniques to bully such as forming cliques, exclusion, rumors, and teasing. These bullies are less likely to identify their behavior as bullying. Come and explore these behaviors and discuss strategies for helping bullies, victims and bystanders. Children and teens welcome to attend with a parent or guardian. Call: (240)-314-8620 to register or go to www.rockvillemd.gov and click on enroll. Course #26791. For additional information contact Cynthia Bangali, Program Coordinator at (240)-314-8317.
