Free parking starts in the City garages and surface lots starts on 12/14 until 1/3 (still have to pay at the meters on the streets).

The Rockville Sister City Corporation (RSCC) announces the showing of the film, Kebab Connection, a comedy in German with English subtitles. RSCC tells us, “It deals with two fast food stands, one Turkish and the other Greek, Ibo a young Turkish filmmaker whose uncle owns one of the stands, Ibo’s German girlfriend, and finally the mafia who become involved in the Greek-Turkish food stand rivalry. The Kebab Connection is a crazy comedic feast from Anno Sail and Faith Akin.”

This Film Night is being shown as part of the cultural awareness program by the Rockville Sister City Corporation. Since 1957 RSCC has encouraged a relationship between Rockville and Pinneberg, Germany. Recently they established a friendly relationship between Jiaxing, China and Rockville. Thanks to Rockville Central friend, Brigitta Mullican for sending us this event tip.

You can fan the movie on Facebook and converse in German! What a fun way to practice.

And while I’m at it — we have a punk band from Rockville named Sister City. I can’t wait to hear them play some day! On their Facebook page, they say they’re recording right now.

Friday Night Out: Art, Theater or … Bingo!

This Friday night’s Art After Hours will jazz it up with very jazz duo “Unstrung” featuring Howie Jung on Vocals/Keyborard and Vince Calcaterra on Violin/Mandolin, while Michelle Ava directs AVAdance &ImproVolutions DC in performance art throughout the evening. 6:30 – 8:30 PM at VisArts. You can also visit the artists’ studios and start the holiday shopping exploration.

Rockville Musical Theatre’s entering its second weekend of performances of “the world’s greatest love story on the streets of 1950′s New York when two young lovers struggle in a world of violence and prejudice” at 8 PM Fridays: Nov. 6 & 13, and Saturdays, Nov. 7 & 14. 2 PM Sundays: Nov. 8 & 15, at F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre. Tickets cost $20, adult; $18, seniors (62+); $16 students (18 and younger).

For the absolute fun of it, turn yourself into a zombie and walk through Rockville Town Center among the unsuspecting. Who used to go to the Rocky Horror Picture Shows? Who just wants to laugh and have fun on a Friday night? What else are you going to do? Rockville Central friend Bill Bird and I are hosting this flash mob.

7:00 PM All the undead in Rockville will meet up at the mall at 12 North Washington Street to form the mob. Have a soda, drink or coffee while you wait. There’s full bar in the Apollo Restaurant /or/ coffee and gelato/desserts at Lola’s Cafe right next door. Get to know your fellow zombies. BUT MAKE IT QUICK!

7:30 PM The mass of zombies will limp off around the streets of Town Center to see who’s still among the living in Town Square.

7:50 PM Zombieland at the Rockville Regal 13!!!! What could be better than a theater full of zombies? See it with any and all of the undead in Rockville. It’s a ZOMCOM!!

The Rockville Antique and Classic Car Show will be POSTPONED until Saturday, October 24th due to the RAIN.

Alternative plans for this rainy Saturday, October 17, 2009 can include the Halloween Family Funfest, sponsored by Rockville’s Department of Recreation and Parks and Finmarc Management, which will be held rain or shine from 10 AM -1 PM at Potomac Woods Plaza. Attend the Funfest instead with its costume parade, moonbounce, DJ, face painting, pumpkin decorating, and story/craft time. Bring old pants with belt loops, shirts and panty hose because you can build a scarecrow.

In it’s a month of rocky horror Dan begins:

During my first semester of college, I accidentally joined a theatre company on campus that does shadowcasts of the Rocky Horror Picture Show despite never having seen the movie before. (A shadowcast, for those who don’t know, is a performance in which people act out a film on stage while it is being screened behind them.) It’s funny how freshman-year shyness can make you do crazy things.

Read his whole post on the “stage version of the horror-rock-opera-parody-etc. movie” because he does a much better job of describing the show than I could, and he is a wonderful storyteller.

As Dan mentions, in addition to the performance at the Parilla Theater, the Kensington Arts Theatre will also be doing a production in the Kensington Town Hall. Lot’s of Rocky Horror this month.

I started working out at LA Boxing when my kickboxinig trainer moved to California last month and our class needed to find a new place. New it is! This gym grows daily and it’s all the rage. Check out the CNN article on how you lose 1,000 calories per workout. Unlike me, some people are really training to fight and they’ll show off what they’ve learned.

Everybody will head over to the Orange Ball for an After Party from 9 PM till midnight where the Mayweather fight will be televised.

Pigs race everyday. Tons of free shows, rides, and activities. I always enjoy viewing the winners of all the competitions for food and crafts.
Thursday night at 7:30 PM is Monster Trucks Adults: $12, Kids 2-7: $7
Friday and Saturday nights at 7:30 PM are the Demolition Derby Competitions – really! Adults: $12, kids 2-7 $7.

Corrieanne Stein, a local young actress who recently appeared on Broadway, has come home to Rockville to take on the title role in the Musical Theater Center’s upcoming production of the classic American musical Annie.

Stein, a 13-year old student at Robert Frost School, was a part of the original cast of Billy Elliot the Musical from June of 2008 through this past July, playing Margaret Gormley of the Ballet Girls ensemble for over 300 performances. During the run of the musical she also understudied the roles of Tracey Atkinson and Debbie Wilkinson, and she appeared at Broadway on Broadway, performed for the Actors Fund and participated in the Annual Easter Bonnet Festival during her time in New York.

As for playing every young girl’s dream role, Stein said, “I have always wanted to play Annie and the Musical Theater Center is giving me that chance. The Musical Theater Center gives me the opportunity to do what I love while helping me learn and grow as an artist. I love being on stage, and everyone at the Center helps you do what every child dreams of doing.”

Stein leads a cast of talented young performers in grades 3 – 12, as well as an adult ensemble that appears as Franklin Roosevelt’s cabinet. Annie is one of the best known musicals in the history of Broadway, and a perennial family favorite. The show features such classic songs as “It’s a Hard Knock Life,” “I Don’t Need Anything But You,” and every little girl’s favorite song, “Tomorrow.”

Annie is directed by Daniel McDonald, with musical direction by Barry Hamilton and Mary Wierick, choreography by Diane Hamilton and is produced by Laurie Levy Issembert.
