VisArt‘s Digital Arts Director, Tim Hampton, reminds us that this Friday, January 9, 2009 is the deadline for VisArts’ annual student photography call for entries.
Middle and high school students who enter will have the opportunity to have their photos juried by Frank Goodyear, the Assistant Curator of Photography at the National Portrait Gallery. If selected, their work will be exhibited at VisArts during the upcoming How You See It exhibition.
Entering is completely free to middle- and high-school students. Simply send an e-mail to digitallab@visartscenter.org with either one or two photos attached (they can be digitally altered or pure).
Include these 5 pieces of information:
1. Artist Name
2. Image Title(s)
3. Artist Age
4. Current School
5. Name(s) of the artist’s photography or art teachers.
The full details are available on the VisArts website.
As Tim points out, “Maybe some selected works will end up being submitted as candidates for your POTD.“
POTD: All Eyes On U

We’ll complete our full week of reader-contributed Pictures Of the Day with another one from Rockville Central friend David Chisham. I am such a sucker for flowers. Of this photo, David says, “I suppose it’s the last we’ll see of the Black-eyed Susans for the year.”
Hopefully it will not be the last photo we see from David!
You can submit photos for me to consider for the POTD anytime — just email them to me. Make sure they are fairly recent (within a couple of months), were taken by you in the City of Rockville, and that you aren’t offering them for publication anywhere else first.
POTD: Rays Of Light

Here’s another POTD by Rockville Central friend Alain Menguy. He calls it “Rays of Light.” So do I.

Still with the contributor photos. This one’s by Rockville Central editor Cynthia Cotte Griffiths. “At least it does not have salmonella,” she says! Couldn’t agree more.

POTD: Square Deal

Continuing our reader-submitted theme.
This shot of Town Square is by Rockville Central reader Jonathan Haber. After all that Hanna activity, the clouds above the courtyard gave me chills. (This was taken near the beginning of summer, though.)
Of the photo, Jonathan says, “I took the elevator the to roof of the VisArts building for this wonderful view.”
We love VisArts here at Rockville Central!

Welcome to our week of all-reader-submitted Pictures Of The Day! We are excited to share this good work.
This beautiful shot of sunflowers is by Rockville Central friend Alain Menguy. Of it he says, “What about a couple of sunflowers hanging there on Montgomery Avenue (route 28) as a symbolic end of the summer?” I say, “Sure!”

(With apologies to Fall Out Boy.) This warm and lovely weather broughht out my perverse streak. Lucky for me, Rockville Central friend Mark Pierzchala sent along a clutch of POTD candidates, and this one was among the bunch.
Of it, he says: “Yellow On White: A school bus stands out on a snowy day like this. Taken in a hurry from within my house on Fordham Street.”
Want to submit a photo for consideration as Picture Of The Day? Delightful! Just email it to me. Rules (there are rules): Taken by you; Exclusive (not published anywhere else); In Rockville city limits; Pretty recent. How easy is that?
POTD: Caught Red- Handed!

I wonder if this little fellow will get caught and end up a statistic in our police blotters?
This bonus holiday POTD is our gift to you.
Season’s Greetings!
POTD: Fore!

It’s not a golf ball on a tee . . . it’s a mushroom! Thanks to RC friend Charlie Gilak for this one. Got a cool photo? Send us a note and maybe it will be a Picture of The Day!
You Can Take Photos In Rockville, Darn It
Many are riled that some photography might be prohibited in the new Rockville Town Square. The Sentinel has >run a piece that ledes with: “A picture is worth 1,000 words, unless one of them is ‘No.’” Washington Post Metro reporter Marc Fisher has weighed in on his blog slugging his piece “Photo Flap Moves To Rockville.”
There’s reason to be concerned. While developed privately, Town Square is really a public place, and was funded with a not-insignificant bunch of City cash. But a spokesperson for Federal Realty, which developed Town Square, has been quoted recently saying that there may be situations where people might be asked to stop taking photos. Mayoral candidate Drew Powell says he was stopped from taking a photo in front of the new library.
Still, concern may not yet need to be alarm. It appears that Federal does not actually have any policy in effect that prohibits picture taking on the streets of downtown Rockville. City Manager Scott Ullery has gotten involved and has received an email from them to that effect (thanks Scott!).
This matters to Rockville Central more than you may imagine: the vast majority of Pictures Of The Day are snapped right in Town Square!
